Sometimes I am full of awe of how the internet works. My nod to facebook and ello has, on ello.co alone been seen by nearly 40 thousand people. It really boost my confidence, but also it’s so nice to be able to reach out to people in a friendly way and connect through my work.
It happens I make little drawings in my comic/illustrationstyle that are reflections of what I’m thinking about at the moment. Lately I’ve come to realize how important social media is to us freelance artists.
At one point in my life, as I was a new mother to my oldest girl, I decided to unplug and delete my accounts. By doing so I “lost” a lot of fans and followers and even businesscontacts, but luckily a lot of them came back as I returned a year or so later. The experiment was on one hand about how I would feel without the noise of facebook and Instagram and all other social media places, (I only kept my Linked In and such, since I thought of them more as less noisy workplatforms). On the other hand I wanted to try what it felt like without the distractions.
Turns out, nothing really changed. My close friends that I talk to on the phone still talked to me. Clients still found me and emailed me or called whenever they needed to contact me. But I had lost my megaphone to the world.
I guess in the end that is why I post my work on social media – it’s my way of easily reaching out to whoever needs to escape their day for a little while and dive into my worlds. And I’m happy to be accessible for whoever needs a break. Also, it’s much easier to connect with new galleries and artistfriends if you hang out at the same pond. But I’m happy I did the experiment, and I’m not sure it did much damage to be away for a while. If anything it’s humbling. And I was very happy to reconnect with some long time followers who where happy to see me again. Yes. Humbling experience. Take care lovelies.
